Alex Fletcher is a former member of POP!, a popular boy band during the 80s. Unlike his more popular band mate Colin Thompson, Alex was just being booked by his manager, Chris Riley to perform in amusement parks or some high school reunions. He was even considered to join the newly introduced television show Battle of the 80s Has Beens. However, when Alex found out that it was actually a boxing match and whoever wins the fight can have a chance to sing, his enthusiasm faded.

Fortunately, his manager, Chris, gave him a good news that the young popular and sexy singer, Cora Corman, is a big fan of his and she wanted Alex to write a song for her entitled ‘Way Back Into Love’ but, since the young singer is about to release the album for her concert, she was giving Alex only a few days to come up with a song, otherwise, she would pick out someone else’s. Since Alex couldn’t write a song in such a short time, Chris sent a lyricist to help him out to beat the schedule.

As the two men corroborated, Sophie Fischer came back to do Alex’s plants. Sophie, with her bandaged finger because of being pricked by Alex’s plant earlier, involuntarily hummed a phrase that Alex believed can be used for his song. He asked her to help write a song with him, but Sophie insisted that she couldn’t as she hadn’t written a song before. Alex, nevertheless, invited her to his performance that night hoping she would change her mind. Sophie thanked him but said she was babysitting for her sister’s children that night.

Sophie’s sister, Rhonda, a big fan of Alex Fletcher, was thrilled to learn about Alex’s offer and practically dragged Sophie to his performance that night. Again, Alex tried to convince Sophie to write him a song, but still, Sophie refused.

The following day, Alex went to Sophie’s working place and asked her to come with him. He played to her the line she gave accompanied by the melody he made. Sophie was finally persuaded and she went with him to his apartment. However, time dragged on but Sophie came up with nothing and invited Alex for a walk. While they were walking outside, they talked about  why the POP! broke up, then Sophie came up with some lyrics, but nothing more until she was able to cajole Alex to get some breakfast. But as soon as Sophie came up with another line, she stopped.

Alex asked her what it was that stopped her and Sophie told him about Sloan Cates, the bestselling author of the book ‘The Incredibly True Story of Sally Michaels’ and who happened to be her former professor and lover and that it was Sophie, herself, who inspired the character of Sally Michaels. She told him about how Sloan described her as a brilliant creative writing student who fell in love with him, but when she found out that he was engaged, made it her career to ruin his life and was found out to be nothing more than a literary mimic. Alex comforted her and tried to make her feel better. They went back to Alex’s place and finished the song and made the demo CD. They ran after Cora in the airport and were very happy when Cora liked it.

Alex called Chris to tell him that Cora liked the song. Chris invited Sophie and him to a dinner date. Incidentally, Sloan Cates was also there. Alex believed that it was time for Sophie to confront him but Sophie believed otherwise. Alex borrowed Chris’ date’s beautiful dress for Sophie to wear and together they confronted Sloan. It didn’t turn out well, and Alex ended up being punched. Sophie took him to his apartment and tended to his bruises. They kissed and made love and woke up under the piano.

Alex invited Sophie to come along to his performance that day which was in an improvised small stage in an amusement park where he sang some old POP! songs. Sophie encouraged Alex and for that Chris was thankful. After the performance, Sophie remembered that she was supposed to have dinner in her sister’s house and invited the two men to come with her, but Chris turned the invitation down.

Rhonda was elated to have Alex for dinner but warned Sophie to be very careful about falling in love with Alex. During dinner, Alex received a call from Chris that Cora wanted to meet with them about the song. The following day, Sophie and Alex went over to Cora’s studio and found out that they had the song remixed. Sophie didn’t like the new version as she believed it violated the true meaning of the song. Alex, though shared her disapproval, didn’t want to contradict Cora for fear that he might lose the chance to go back to show business.

Cora invited them to her party that night. Sophie had her chance to express her opinion about the remix and Cora appreciated her honesty, but felt that the song wasn’t finished yet and pressed them for the last verse. In Alex’s apartment, Sophie, completely uninspired over how the song turned out, found it difficult to write an ending to the song. She apologized to Alex and honestly told him that she couldn’t finish the song in her state of mind. They had an argument and Sophie was deeply offended by what Alex said to her and walked out.

The following day, Alex went over to Cora’s studio and was surprised to find out that Sophie finished the song. He visited Sophie to apologize and found out that she was moving to Florida, but not before Cora’s concert because her nephew and niece were so proud to have her aunt write a song for the famous singer. When Cora introduced Alex, they thought that he took the credit for himself alone, but Sophie was surprised to hear a different song composed by Alex just for her. She tried to find him and when she did, she heard the introduction of the song they wrote together. Alex was able to convince Cora to sing the song as they had written it, after all.
